Is There A Registered Dietitian On The Medical Staff At Ohio State University
For more than 20 years, Ohio State's Human Nutrition Dietetic Internship Program has prepared interns with excellent training to become registered dietitians. In this accredited, non-degree program, interns develop their programs based on their individual educational needs, preferences and interests. Additionally, many opportunities exist to receive personalized training from our more than 40 partner agencies and complete a variety of special projects and assignments.
With a focus on personalized nutrition and counseling, interns complete the program either full time or part time with a combination of classroom instruction and supervised practice at medical centers, community agencies, wellness centers, private industry, food services, hospitals and public schools.
Ohio State Master's Degrees in Nutrition
The requirements set by the Commission on Dietetics Registration to become registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) include a minimum of a master's degree to take the credentialing exam for RDNs beginning on January 1, 2024.

As an intern, you'll develop the advanced knowledge and skills in a number of areas, including:
- nutrition assessment
- dietary care planning
- nutrition counseling and education
- management and leadership
- personnel management
- problem solving and decision-making
- professional growth and development
Successful completion of the dietetic internship qualifies graduates for the Registration Examination for Dietitians administered by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The full-time and part-time tracks start in mid-August of each year.
The internship abides by university holidays. Dietetic intern breaks do not necessarily coincide with the Ohio State academic calendar. Interns have at least two weeks of break in late December.
Internship Rotation Schedule
Medical Nutrition Therapy
- Clinical core, outpatient and acute care rotations, 400 hours
Community/Public Health Nutrition
- Includes corporate wellness, private practice, non-profits, and government agencies, 320 hours
Foodservice Management
- 240 hours
Research and Special Projects
- 10 hours
Culminating Experience
- Gain additional experience in any of the above areas, 280 hours
Individual Supervised Practice Program
The Individual Supervised Practice Program is an option if you have a doctorate degree at the time you start the internship program.

Registration Examination for Dietitians
Successful completion of the bachelor's program and dietetics internship qualifies you to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians.

The Ohio State University Human Nutrition Dietetic Internship Program is fully accredited through 2022 by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, Illinois, 60606-6995, 312-899-0040.
